The Pochologist Speaks about Passion-Driven Enterprises for YES Philippines

On August 17, 2017, the Young Entrepreneurs Society Philippines or YES Philippines, in partnership with EntrepRadio and Pen Brothers, organized a seminar entitled “Passion-Driven Enterprises”. This 3-hour seminar was aimed towards a mindset shift from going into business being motivated by money to going into business being motivated by passion and purpose. The seminar featured none other than Filipino motivational speaker Pocholo "The VoiceMaster" Gonzales – the most recognized Filipino voice artist, veteran radio broadcaster, internationally-awarded youth advocate, author, and a highly sought-after voice director, trainer and motivational speaker. Pocholo is also a Go Negosyo awardee and Angelpreneur, and the founder of Youth Entrepreneurship Academy of the Philippines (YEAP).

EntrepRadio Anchor Dennis Sajo talks about Youth Entrepreneurship Academy of the Philippines

The seminar opened with EntrepRadio’s main anchor and YEAP Executive Director Dennis Sajo, who introduced their advocacy in igniting the entrepreneurial spirit of the youth. He also shared his own experience on how his own passion for speaking and motivating people has led him to cross paths with the VoiceMaster, and how he grabbed the opportunity to host the show and head YEAP when the opportunity was opened to him. Dennis then introduced and called on the VoiceMaster onstage, whom he referred to as his mentor and brother.

Filipino motivational speaker inspires the youth to build business with passion and purpose

Pocholo started his talk by energizing the crowd and getting acquainted with them. He shared the story of his entrepreneurial journey, from the time he started working as a freelance voice artist until he opened his first recording studio, Univoicesal Productions. He told the participants how his first business venture failed, costing him 2 million pesos worth of investment after 6 months. Learning from his mistakes, he attempted to start a smaller recording studio in 2005, which is now what is known as Creativoices Productions.

After entertaining and mesmerizing the audience with his voice acting talent by doing a repertoire of character voices, Pocholo then shared that PASSION and PURPOSE are the 2 key ingredients not only in building a successful business, but also in being able to persist amidst trials and challenges. “Just do what you love and the money will follow,” was the wise advice of the VoiceMaster. He also said that knowing why you are doing your business in the first place guides the entrepreneur as he builds and grows his enterprise.

Filipino motivational speaker Pocholo Gonzales talks about passion driven enterprises

Pocholo then led the group through a quick workshop on how they can identify their passion that can be turned into a business. He defined passion as something that someone would be willing to do everyday even if they are not getting paid to do it. He then shared different methods on how those passions can be made into a business – creating a product or service, creating a digital product or even teaching the skill to other people.

The seminar ended with Pocholo inviting the participants to volunteer and become part of EntrepRadio and YEAP, which he founded for young aspiring entrepreneurs.

The workshop started with a focus group discussion, led by Pocholo. He set the mood and the expectations of what the participants were to learn for the rest of the day. He also talked about his school, Pochology Academy, and shared the organization’s mission of inspiring greatness and excellence in every Filipino.

Pocholo then gave the floor to the participants, and asked them to share their challenges and what they would like to learn about public speaking and selling. One by one, the participants talked about what they feel they need to improve in order to confidently sell the products of their company. They brought up their fears in public speaking, and how they would want their voice to improve in order to deliver their sales presentation better.

After the focus group discussion, Pocholo called the next trainer, Ada Cuaresma, to begin the workshop proper. Dubbed as the “Voice Care Queen,” Ada is one of Pocholo’s students whom he trained to become a motivational speaker. She handled the public speaking section of the workshop, to share what she has also learned from the most sought-after Filipino motivational speaker.

After a quick icebreaker to energize the class, Ada started with an activity, where the participants did a 1-minute product presentation to evaluate the pre-workshop performance of the class. This activity was followed by a short lunch break. After lunch, Voiceworx scholar and VOTY broadcaster Kelvin Lumibao energized the crowd by doing several voice impersonations that he does as a voice artist.

Ada came back onstage and resumed the lesson with managing public speaking anxiety. Ada explained the reasons why public speaking is the number 1 fear, and equipped the class with tools to overcome that fear. She also shared the different elements that the participants can use to make their presentations more engaging and relevant to their audience, and ended with a structure that they can use to give their presentations a better flow.

The last part of the workshop was handled by Microphone Club member Mike Acuna, who focused on selling tips and strategies. He supplemented the public speaking training with tools to help the participants present their products better to their clients. From proper selling mindset to effective selling vocabulary, Mike provided a clear roadmap for the participants, and opened their mind to a new approach on effective selling.

Sales Presentation Simulation

The whole-day workshop prepared the participants for the sales presentation simulation the following day. They were asked to prepare a 10-15 minute presentation with product demonstration, which they presented in front of a panel and the class. The panel consisted of the Pochology Academy Trainers, TAG Media Founder Engr. Grace Bondad-Nicolas, and Multibiz Founder Christian Leynes.

After an icebreaker, Pocholo shared about his journey to discovering his passion for voice acting at a very young age, growing up in the province of Mariveles, Bataan. He then talked about how he started to pursue that passion at age 16 in DZMM, as well as the challenges and obstacles he met along the way. Pocholo also shared how he built his company and his voice acting school, fueled not only by his passion for the craft, but also for opening the doors of the industry to those who aspire to become part of it.

Pocholo used his story as an example of how important passion is in carrying out one’s work. He spoke about passion as the fire that makes a person look forward to waking up and going to work everyday, the fuel that helps a person push forth in times of adversity. And yes, Pocholo wowed the audience by doing an ensemble of voice impressions – from cartoon characters to famous personalities and celebrities.

Pocholo also spoke about one of his favorite people, National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal, and set him as an example of a man of passion. Pocholo talked a little bit about the history of Rizal, and how he was able to write novels, meet people and travel the world despite his lack of technology and freedom. The mini-history class became a challenge to the audience to discover their own greatness and become the best version of themselves.

Pocholo then transitioned to his main topic, “8 to be Great”. He shared to the audience the 8 qualities that make a person great – including passion, purpose and gratitude. Towards the end, Pocholo encouraged the employees to aim not just to be happy but to be great.

The VoiceMaster shares his business failures and lessons

Pocholo came onstage as the first speaker. He began by introducing what he does as a voice artist, and even impressed the audience with a “sample” of the character voices he has dubbed. Pocholo then went on to share his first-hand experience of the monopoly and politics that surrounded the voice acting industry. He recalled his first dubbing experience, where he was told by a veteran that he is no good and that he will not make it in the industry.

Pocholo transitioned into telling his “fuck up” story, where he invested a huge amount of money to build his own recording studio, with little experience in handling a business. He bought a large office space which he turned into a studio complete with state-of-the-art equipment. The business closed in just half a year because in that short moment, Pocholo lost hold of his vision to make the Philippines the center of voiceover excellence in Asia.

Pocholo then told of how he bounced back in 2005, and built his second company as well as the first voice acting school in the country. Even though he started out small and in a more shaky ground, it was then that he let his passion for voice acting take over, and his business turned out more successful than expected.

The VoiceMaster Speaks at Impact Hub's Fuck Up Night

In closing, Pocholo shared the number one lesson he learned in his experience: STICK TO YOUR WHY. Ultimately, it’s his passion that fuels him to work on his business, and to keep giving opportunities to those who aspire to become voice artists like Pocholo. Because of Pocholo’s school, what was once an elusive and closed-door industry became open to those who wish to become part of it.

In the seminar entitled “Effective Communication for Leaders,” Pocholo started on an inspirational note by sharing his story. He shared how he got into voice acting, radio broadcasting, motivational speaking – and how he has developed the passion to teach other people to appreciate and care for their voice. Pocholo also discussed a little bit about the voice acting industry, and how it has evolved from when he started more than two decades ago. And yes, he also amazed the audience with his repertoire of voice character impressions!

Pocholo then proceeded to the main topic on effective communication, with a focus on the voice. He sent the powerful message that the voice is the most powerful human instrument, as it has the power to start a war or express the greatest love. He then talked about 4 important qualities of an effective communication, which he summed up in an acronym of the Filipino word LAHI – love, authenticity, honesty and integrity. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” were the wise words of the VoiceMaster. He said that in order for people to want to communicate with you, they should feel that your intentions are pure and clean.

Pocholo also discussed the different elements of the voice such as pitch, volume, prosody, and timbre, and how these elements affect the quality and the meaning that one’s message is trying to convey. He then ended his presentation by reminding the participants that at the end of the day, it’s not WHAT you say, but HOW you say it.

Pocholo then called onstage one of his trainers in Pochology Academy, Ada Cuaresma. Dubbed as the “Voice Care Queen,” Ada is the Executive Director of Voice Care Philippines, and has worked with the VoiceMaster to conduct workshops all over the country. Ada was a student of the VoiceMaster in his voice acting school.
